- EXCLUSIVE: Celebrity hairdresser Lee Stafford told FEMAIL how to style hair for coming out of lockdown while make-up artist Edy London shared the best looks
- Lee recommends styles for nights out, date night and going back to the office
- Edy explained that dewy skin and natural eye make-up will be big trends this spring and summer
Lockdown restrictions have eased this week, meaning people can meet outside in groups of six and no longer have to stay at home.
But with months being stuck inside in casual clothes and hair shoved up in a messy bun, many will be raring to glam up to head out for a picnic or for a spot of outdoor socialising.
With months of glamming up ahead, and restrictions set to be completely lifted in June, FEMAIL spoke to two experts about the best way to style hair and make-up, with a facemask as people head back to the office, and get ready for outdoor dining and drinking.
Speaking to FEMAIL, celebrity hair dresser Lee Stafford said: ‘Wearing a mask is essential for protecting yourself and others from Covid-19 on a daily basis, however it can become challenging when it comes to styling your hair.
‘Styling without flattening their blow-dry with straps, breaking fine hairs around the hairline or causing irritation behind the ear from where the straps tend to rub are just a few of the potential challenge women face’.

Speaking to FEMAIL, c elebrity hair dresser Lee Stafford said: ‘Wearing a mask is essential for protecting yourself and others from Covid-19 on a daily basis, however it can become challenging when it comes to styling your hair.
‘Wearing a face covering can also make some people feel hotter than usual (which can also be worse for peri/menopausal women) or a little claustrophobic, so choosing styles that can keep hair away from the face and off the neck will be more comfortable whilst still looking put together’.
Meanwhile, celebrity make-up artist Edy London explained to FEMAIL that bold lashes and lips are set to be the big trends for spring and summer, as people go all out after months of minimal make-up, complementing bold features with dewy skin.
‘Seeing how much our skin has improved – we will think twice now about what we put on our face.
‘Spring Summer 2021 will be all about healthy looking skin, natural eye make up and finally celebrating our most sexy face feature – lips that have been hidden behind those (categorically unsexy) masks’.
Here, they tell FEMAIL the best looks for date night, going back to the office, a glam night out and for a casual day time look.
For date night: Smooth and glossy hair with natural eyelash extensions
As restrictions are eased, many couples will be reunited, with couples meeting in parks while by 12th April people will be able to sit outside in restaurants.
But what’s the best way to glam up after months of sitting inside make-up free in pyjamas?
Lee explained to FEMAIL that hair should be a mix of ‘smooth and glossy’ while your make-up should be dewy, with bold lashes as the eyes will be the main focus of a face-masked up face, according to Edy.

He told FEMAIL: ‘Date night looks should be the perfect balance of undone mixed with the right amount of polish. Smooth glossy waves are always a great go-to option for this look.
‘Get creative by choosing sparkling accessories and clips to stack and layer, attach them where you find it can rub as this keeps loops from the mask from irritating skin and keep the pressure away from behind the ears.
‘By using grips you can even apply them to the loose ends of the masks that are tied behind the head, which stops hair being flattened at the crown.
‘Simply tuck the ends under the clips and tie underneath at the nape of the neck, wearing your hair over the ends to disguise them.
Perfect with a light-curl hair, Edy recommended going with bold, natural looking, eyelash extensions, set to be a top trend for spring.
‘These will always be within the top three most sought after salon treatments, especially now that for the next few months we will sadly still only be able to see our eyes,’ she says.
‘Lash extensions have been a must-have for those in the know for over a decade now; they save oodles of time in the morning and mean you start every day with a bright-eyed wonder (that’s you) staring back at you in the mirror.

‘All you need is a little bit of base on your skin and a lippie and you are ready to go,’ Edy, who works with A-list celebrities including Ellie Goulding and Mel B added.
‘As long as you work with a great technician, lashes can be as natural or dramatic as you like, and can completely improve/enhance the appearance of your eye shape.
‘For example, for hooded eyes extensions can be a more effective option than blepharoplasty surgery to make them look younger, more open and fresher.
FOR GOING BACK TO THE OFFICE AND A DAYTIME LOOK: TIED BACK WITH DEWY SKIN AND A WARM TONED EYE
From this week, thousands of people across the UK will head back to the office after months of working from home.
Lee explained to FEMAIL that a chic top knot is the way forward for those heading into communal work areas – as well as those who are wearing masks for extending periods.
‘With some us heading back to the office in smaller groups, the need for social distance and mask wearing is incredibly important,’ Lee said.

‘This looks so well for anyone who needs to wear a facemask for a prolonged period of time.
‘Team a chic top knot with softer sections around the face with accessories to create detail whilst holding back the straps of your facemask, to avoid pressure and rubbing on the backs of the ears making it more comfortable throughout the day.
‘Creating a little more volume at the root helps to counteract hair looking flattened by straps whilst softening the look of the straps around the face’ he added.
Meanwhile, for another relaxed daytime look, Lee recommends the classic half-up half-down look.

‘A low-key undone look, the combination of loose waves with a half up knot for a pared back day look works perfectly with a bandana detail. The key to this look is keeping it simple and not too done.
‘Keep the waves deconstructed then when applying the bandana this will keep the style looking effortless.
‘This look works really well with the bandana to keep those straps away from the back of your ears, by simply looping the bandana ends through the face mask straps and tying at the crown, this relieves pressure from behind the ears and stops any rubbing of the delicate skin there. It also protects the fine hair at the hairline from getting snagged and breaking.
While Lee recommends tying hair up to go back to the office, Edy advises going for a a dewy skin look for everyday make-up, for a glowy, healthy looking face.
Set to be continue as a huge trend this year, Edy who sells her own ‘dewy skin make-up brush set’ for £29.99 – says the look is easily achievable.
Edy also revealed that a warm-toned eye look would be the ‘perfect post lockdown look.
‘Very natural and subtle, gives us time to get use to wearing make up again rather than jumping from nothing into full on Cleopatra eye.
‘Easy to do at home for a subtle glam look. Edy London Eye Contouring Set 502 has all of the brushes that you need to achieve this look’.
She recommends applying a cream texture eye shadow base of your preferred brand in a caffe latte colour and blend into the lid, with her favourite Wisdom by Trinny London or 649 Nude Dress Palette by Dior.
Next, she says it’s best to apply slightly darker shade eye shadow on the deep crease, and along the top lash time using a blending brush such a her own brush 17.
‘Use blender brush, such as my number 20 again to smooth it all and get rid of any obvious lines.
‘Using the same darker shade use smudging brush number 24 and expand and blend the darker shadow onto the lower lash line.’
FOR A GLAM EVENING LOOK: LOOSE TIED UP HAIR AND A BOLD LIP
Within weeks, pub gardens will be open and people will be able to stay out sipping in the sun, while by June night clubs and restaurants will be gone.
To keep it simple and glam, Lee recommends a few straps of hair over the face for a gentle framing.
‘A simple and glam look, the focus here is to keep fine face framing tendrils of hair over the straps to disguise them and soften the look of the mask.

‘Often masks can make us feel hot or slightly claustrophobic so keeping the main section of the hair back in a low ponytail away from the face can help to alleviate this.
‘Extra volume at the root helps to detract from where masks can flatten the hair creating a pinned down uneven look.
Meanwhile, Edy says that bold lips are going to be the glow-to glam look of later spring and summer.
‘After a year of minimal make up, and hiding our most beautiful face features behind mask – we will be showing off our lips in all their kissable glory; as already seen on a Hermes and Saint Laurent catwalks it’s all about the lips in S/S 2021,’ she explained.
‘Bold colours such as Girl About Town by MAC or 91 Rouge Souverain by Yves Saint Laurent should be always be applied with a good make up brush to avoid smudging. I recommend Edy London brush number 28,’ she added.
‘Red and Fuchsia will be seen more than even on the hopefully busy again streets of all our major cities – the statement lip is back!
‘If you have to wear a mask occasionally during the day to get to places in taxis etc, consider a matte finish lipstick which tends to stay in one place. If you don’t have a matte finish lipstick, use a tissue to blot off any excess product.
‘Before applying lipstick, moisturise your lips with a lip balm.
‘If you can stretch your post-lockdown budget a bit further, you might want to consider Lush Lip Mask by Mimi Luzon. This deeply nourishing lip mask promises to heal and rejuvenate dry, chapped lips,’ she added.
