US broadcaster Megyn Kelly savages Meghan Markle

US broadcaster Megyn Kelly savages ‘totally un-self-aware’ Meghan Markle for saying she ‘doesn’t believe in grandeur… then inviting the Clooneys and Oprah to her wedding and covering herself in blood diamonds from a Saudi Prince’

  • Former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly criticises Meghan Markle over interview
  • She referred to diamonds allegedly given to Meghan by Saudi Crown Prince
  • Ms Kelly also said Duchess was ‘completely unaware of how she sounded’

Meghan Markle ‘covered herself in blood diamonds’ despite saying she was not attached to the ‘grandeur’ surrounding her role, US broadcaster Megyn Kelly said.

The former Fox News anchor also criticised the Duchess of Sussex for making the claim despite inviting George Clooney and Oprah Winfrey to her wedding in 2018.

Ms Kelly spoke out on ITV’s Good Morning Britain after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s dramatic interview with Oprah was broadcast in the US on CBS overnight.

She said this morning: ‘She (Meghan) goes onto say, I don’t believe in any of the grandeur. There’s an article already up on the New York Post here in the States that’s saying this is the person who had Clooney and Oprah at her wedding even though she didn’t even know them, and then covered herself in blood diamonds from a Saudi Prince, so like, spare us that you’re not into any of the grandeur.’

It comes after claims were made last week that Meghan wore a pair a striking diamond earrings that were a wedding gift from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, who approved the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The article Ms Kelly was referring to was an opinion piece in the New York Post by Maureen Callahan headlined: ‘Meghan Markle’s interview was full of bull.’

Speaking from New York, Ms Kelly also told ITV: ‘What I saw tonight was somebody who is totally un-self-aware, completely unaware of how she sounded.

‘Like, I wasn’t planning on saying anything shocking, expect for my husband’s racist family almost drove me to suicidal thoughts while I was pregnant with my baby.’

The ‘grandeur’ reference came when Meghan was speaking about learning that Archie would not be receiving security and would not become a prince.

Oprah asked the Duchess: ‘Was the title… was him being called a prince, Archie, being called a prince, was that important to you?’

And Meghan replied: ‘If it meant he was going to be safe, then, of course. All the grandeur surrounding this stuff is an attachment that I don’t personally have, right?

‘I’ve been a waitress, an actress, a princess, a duchess. I’ve always just still been Meghan, right? So, for me, I’m clear on who I am, independent of all that stuff.

‘And the most important title I will ever have is ‘Mom.’ I know that. But the idea of our son not being safe, and also the idea of the first member of colour in this family not being titled in the same way that other grandchildren would be.’

It comes after Meghan was criticised last week for speaking up for human rights in Saudi Arabia yet wearing priceless earrings from its rulers.

She was photographed wearing the earrings, a wedding gift from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, three weeks after the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, whose death the prince has accepted responsibility for.

Meghan was claimed to have been ‘unaware’ of the global outrage at the time about reports the prince had ordered the murder.

She wore them at a dinner in a visit to Fiji in October 2018. Her staff told journalists the jewellery was ‘borrowed’, without stating from whom.

Meghan has campaigned for women in Saudi Arabia to be allowed to drive, appearing with Loujain al-Hathloul, an activist who has since been jailed.

Lawyers for the duchess denied to The Times that she had misled anyone about the provenance of the earrings.
