Will Smith slapped Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett‘s bald head during the live Academy Awards show on Sunday evening.
But hours later their mutual friend Sean Combs – who now goes by Diddy – told Page Six while at the Vanity Fair bash that the superstars are doing fine.
‘That’s not a problem. That’s over. I can confirm that,’ the 52-year-old Diddy said to the outlet. ‘It’s all love. They’re brothers.’
He says they are fine now: Diddy told PageSix at the Vanity Fair Oscar party that Will Smith and Chris Rock have worked out their fight at the Oscars
Soon after the slap, Diddy was seen on stage introducing Francis Ford Coppola, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro for a tribute the 50 year anniversary of The Godfather.
Diddy addressed the slap on stage and said Smith, 53, and Rock, 57, had to make up at the Oscar after party.
But there was no evidence that Will and Chris interacted after the show of violence that could have gotten Smith arrested.
Rock was on stage at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre to present the Best Documentary Feature prize on Sunday when he mocked some of the famous faces in the crowd, and the King Richard actor took offense when Chris poked fun at his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaven-headed look.
Chris said: ‘Jada, love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.”
Pow! Smith slapped Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett’s bald head during the live Academy Awards show on Sunday evening
Although Will laughed at first, Jada looked unimpressed and Will then walked to the stage, smacked the presenter and walked away again. Chris said: ‘Oh Wow. Will Smith just smacked the s***t out of me.’
Will then shouted from his seat: ‘Take my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth.’
Chris said: ‘Wow dude. It was a ‘G.I. Jane’ joke.’
The Men in Black star then again said: ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth.’
Chris appeared stunned as he said: ‘I’m going to OK… I’ll keep going? That was, er, the greatest night in the history of television. Okay. So we are here to give a documentary out, to give an Oscar for Best Documentary. Now the beauty of documentaries, they make you feel smart, like you read a book or something but all you really did was get high and watch Netflix. So here we go, the nominees are…’
That was NOT OK: Rock looked stunned that Will struck him on live TV for a joke
He smiled after the hit: Smith looked pleased after he hit Rock on live TV but many people in the audience were disturbed
When Will won Best Actor for his role in King Richard the room gave him a standing ovation, even though he had just hit Rock.
And Smith defended his act of violence.
he insisted he is ‘being called on’ to ‘protect’ those he loves as he picked up the Best Actor Oscar.
The Bad Boys actor addressed his actions as he tearfully said: ‘Oh man. Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. In this time in my life, in this moment I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world.
A bad night for this guy: Here Rock is seen backstage at the Oscars
‘Making this film, I got to protect, Aunjanue Ellis, who was one of the strongest, most delicate people I’ve ever met. I got to protect Saniyya [Sidney] and Demi [Singleton], the two actresses who played Venus and Serena.
‘I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people. I know to do what we do you gotta be able to take abuse, you gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you, in this business, you’ve got to be able to have people disrespecting you. You gotta smile and pretend like that’s OK.
‘Thank you D – Denzel [Washington] said a couple of minutes ago, be careful, at your highest moment, that’s when the devil comes for you.
‘It’s like I wanna be a vessel for love, I wanna say thank you to Venus and Serena and the entire Williams family for entrusting me with your story. That’s what I wanna do, I want to be an ambassador of that kind of love and care and concern.’
Will went on to apologize for his actions, and insisted he wasn’t crying because of his win.
He said ‘I want to apologize to the Academy, to all my fellow nominees this is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award, it’s not about winning an award for me, it’s about being able to shine a light. Tim and Trevor and Zac, and Saniyya and Demi and Aunjanue and the entire cast and crew of ‘King Richard, Venus and Serena, the entire Williams family.
‘Art imitates life, I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams.
‘Love will make you do crazy things.
‘To my mother, a lot of this moment is really complicated for me, but to my mother, she didn’t want to come, she has her knitting crew she’s watching with. Being able to love and care for my mother, my family, my wife thank you for this honour, thank you for this honour, thank you for this moment. I thank you on behalf of Richard, Oracene, and the entire Williams family.’
And the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air star admitted he was concerned he wouldn’t be welcomed back to the Academy Awards in future.
He said: ‘I hope the Academy invites me back, thank you.’
No frowns here: Smith seemed happy with his Oscar win as he beamed with his family (L-R) Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, Will Smith, Jaden Smith and Trey Smith attend the 2022 Vanity Fair Oscar Party
His son Jaden Smith, 50 Cent and Judd Apatow are among the stars reacting to Smith smacking Rock at the Oscars.
Will and Jada’s son Jaden appeared to back his father in a since-deleted tweet. He wrote: ‘And That’s How We Do It.’ The 23-year-old rapper later shared a selfie and said his dad’s acceptance speech for his first Oscar for Best Actor reduced him to tears. In the second deleted post, he wrote: ‘My Dads Speech Made Me Cry.’
Hip-hop legend 50 Cent shared a meme of the moment Will struck Chris with ‘Everybody Hates Chris’ across it, the name of the sitcom the 57-year-old stand-up narrated.
The Candy Shop hitmaker joked in the caption: ‘B**** don’t you ever play with me. LOL.’
Tiffany Haddish defended Smith as well.
By contrast, director Judd Apatow hailed the attack ‘pure out of control rage and violence’ and said Will ‘could have killed’ Chris.
Will he publicly apologize? Smith has yet to publicly apologize to Chris and Chris is not pressing charges through the police
In a since-deleted post, he wrote: ‘He could have killed him. That’s pure out of control rage and violence. They’ve heard a million jokes about them in the last three decades. They are not freshman in the world of Hollywood and comedy. He lost his mind.
‘Seems like Will Smith’s plan to get comedian and the world to not make jokes about him is not going to pan out. The Williams family must be furious. Pure narcissism.’
Referring to Demi Moore playing GI Jane in the 1997 film, he added: ‘Also — GI Jane was gorgeous. What exactly is insulting about being compared to a ripped, stunning Demi?’
Comic Kathy Griffin was also unimpressed. She tweeted: ‘Let me tell you something, it’s a very bad practice to walk up on stage and physically assault a Comedian. Now we all have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theaters.’
While One Direction star Liam Payne told reporters: ‘I believe whatever he felt that he did, he had the right to do. I had to leave my chair I’ll be honest with you, it cut me really deep.’
