A West Midlands zoo enlisted a Marvin Gaye impersonator to encourage its endangered monkeys to ‘get it on’ for mating season.

Staff at Trentham Monkey Forest in Stoke-on-Trent invited singer Dave Largie to sing some of the late soul legend’s greatest hits to the Barbary macaques.

Footage shows Largie serenading the monkeys with the 1973 classic hit Let’s Get It On and  1982’s Sexual Healing.

And keepers reported seeing some classic Barbary macaque ‘lovey dovey’ action as a result of the impromptu concert.

Marvin Gaye impersonator Dave Largie sang some of the soul legend’s greatest hits at Trentham Monkey Forest in Stoke-on-Trent last weekend to give the Barbary macaques some inspiration ahead of mating season

Park director Matt Lovatt said: ‘We thought it could be a creative way to encourage our females to show a little affection to males that might not have been so lucky in love’

Keepers at the wildlife park reported seeing some classic Barbary macaque ‘lovey dovey’ action as a result of the impromptu concert

A zoo spokesman said they wanted Dave to ‘help boost the monkey love this mating season’.

There are fewer than 8,000 Barbary macaque monkeys left worldwide, 140 of which roam freely around Trentham Monkey Forest.

The tail-less species originates in North Africa in Algeria and Morocco and an estimated 250 Barbary macaques famously live on the Rock of Gibraltar.

A spokesperson said: ‘David, a highly experienced love song guru, sang several Marvin Gaye classics to the monkeys whilst in amongst them and they seemed very relaxed and full of love!’

Keepers hope the musical intervention could result in a record number of babies this summer.

Park director Matt Lovatt said: ‘Monkeys being serenaded by Marvin Gaye – who’d have thought it!

Park director Matt Lovatt added: ‘Birthing season occurs in late spring/early summer each year, so hopefully Marvin’s done his magic and we can welcome some new babies’

‘Females in season mate with several males so paternity amongst our furry residents is never known.

‘Each birth is vital to the species with Barbary macaques being classed as endangered.

‘Birthing season occurs in late spring/early summer each year, so hopefully Marvin’s done his magic and we can welcome some new babies.

‘So here’s hoping that we have a record number of babies this year down to David and his serenading!’
