Spectacular plans for a ‘thank you’ party involving ten million people on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend will be unveiled today.

The National Thank You Day aims to set up thousands of street parties on Sunday, June 5 to mark 70 years of service by the Queen.

The plan is backed by celebrities including TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh, The Great British Bake Off’s Prue Leith and former EastEnder Ross Kemp.

The Diamond Jubilee in 2012 saw an estimated 8.5million Britons celebrate. People are pictured above at a street party

The celebrations, which it is hoped will to be bigger than previous get-togethers such as the 2012 Diamond Jubilee, are also backed by the National Lottery Community Fund and community groups like the Royal Voluntary Service.

Kemp, 57, said: ‘It’s our chance to say a great, big thank you to the Queen for 70 years of service, but also to each other – the people in our own lives – who we rely on every day. Let’s make this a truly great day, with the biggest party ever, to say the biggest thank you ever.’

An estimated ten million celebrated the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 and the wedding of Charles and Diana in 1981.

The Diamond Jubilee in 2012 saw an estimated 8.5million Britons celebrate.

Peter Stewart, executive director of the Eden Project and The Big Jubilee Lunch, said: ‘It’s a fantastic opportunity to bring people together and to say thank you to our neighbours and communities after all we have been through over the past two years.

‘Join in and share friendship food and fun to say thank you with a Big Jubilee Lunch on Thank You Day – together we can create a piece of history that everyone can feel part of.’

Catherine Johnstone, chief executive of the Royal Voluntary Service, said: ‘There are so many people, including volunteers, who have gone the extra mile over the last two years and I look forward to getting together with others on the day to celebrate and recognise their contribution.’

The first National Thank You Day was held last year, with the aim of bringing communities closer together.

Meanwhile, MPs have launched a campaign for Big Ben to bong 70 times to mark the jubilee.

Conservative MPs Alec Shelbrooke and Mark Francois, as well as Labour MPs Clive Betts and Barry Sheerman, called for the nation’s timekeeper to chime once for every year of the Queen’s reign.

Leader of the Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg, who is also backing the proposal, said: ‘For the Elizabeth Tower to be fully restored and for Big Ben to chime 70 times – one for each year of her reign – would be a wonderful tribute to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.’

It could take place during a visit to Westminster by the monarch during her jubilee celebrations.

Work has begun to remove scaffolding from the Victorian-built Elizabeth Tower that houses the 13.5 ton Big Ben, after a five-year renovation.

The special four-day Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend begins on Thursday June 2.
