This is the moment a mother and her two children narrowly avoided being hit by a train after their motorcycle got stuck on a railway crossing.

Dramatic CCTV footage shows the family try to move the bike forward across at tracks in Lumajang Regency in the province of East Java, Indonesia on December 9.

As they spot the train, they frantically try to pull the bike towards them, but are forced to abandon their attempts as the train smashes through the motorcycle.

In the clip, the mother and children can be seen driving up to the metal tracks before they get stuck in the crossing.

They tried to make their way across, but the bike didn’t seem to generate enough power as the mother tried to start it.

As the three appear to spot the oncoming train, the children leapt out and the young boy ran over to the side.

The mother stayed, trying to drag the bike which had fallen over, off the tracks as her daughter ran over to help.

After seconds of desperate attempts, the pair joined the boy and fled to the side as the train sped on and swept the motorbike away in its path.

It was then flung out into nearby undergrowth.

Police from the Lumajang district station arrived to check what caused the accident and ordered local council officials to inspect the crossing.

Inspector Mohammed Lestari said: ‘The mother was very lucky especially because she had children with her when the accident happened.

‘We have interviewed her and we do not believe she did anything wrong. She was very shaken by the accident.

‘The relevant authorities are now inspecting the crossing to assess how it can be made safer.’

The mother and two children recover at home after the level crossing accident

Earlier this year in March, a motorcyclist was almost struck by a speeding train at a level crossing in West Java, Indonesia.

Footage of the incident shows the motorbike cross the tracks moments before the train rumbles into shot.

The train driver was forced to blow his horn to warn the motorcyclist, who seemed unaware of it.

Muhlis Jajang of the Indonesian Railroad Lover’s Facebook group posted the footage as a warning to other railway users. He wrote: ‘Don’t copy it.’
