The Met Office’s Dan Stroud told the Express: ‘During the course of Saturday afternoon cloud increasing from the SW with a spell of persistent and at times heavy rain likely to move northeast across the UK.
‘Winds strengthening in the south and east late Saturday afternoon and evening with coastal gales, gusting to 60-70mph along the south coast in places.
‘The area of organised cloud and rain, locally heavy is expected to clear north and east on Sunday but may persist across the far northeast of Scotland for much of the day where it will remain windy for much of the day, again with coastal gales.’
He added that most of the UK will experience a mixture of sunshine and showers with a risk of thunder after the wet spell.

‘That’s bad news for people with gas and electric because your bills are going through the roof.’

After a sunny end to the summer, a suspected tornado swept through villages in coastal England this week damaging more than 20 homes.
Windows were smashed, roofs were blown off and walls were wrecked by the freak weather event which struck in Humberston, Lincolnshire, and across the Humber Estuary at Thorngumbald, East Yorkshire.
Emergency services, utility workers and council staff headed to the scenes amid a trail of destruction which also left a motorhome on its side after the tornado swept through.
