Britney Spears‘ lawyers claimed that she was being ‘extorted’ by her father Jamie Spears as he prepared to resign as her conservator, TMZ reported on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old singers’ legal team filed documents in court claiming that Jamie’s legal team is requesting around $2 million before he’s willing to step down.
Although part of the fee would go to cover his legal costs and to pay his daughter’s business manager Tri Star, a large chunk would presumably go directly to him.
Big request: Lawyers for Britney Spears, 39, argued that she was being ‘extorted’ by her father Jamie Spears, 69, after they claimed in court filings that he was asking for $2 million to step down, TMZ reported on Tuesday
Britney’s lawyers claim her isn’t willing to step down from his position until he has received the money.
‘The status quo is no longer tolerable, and Britney Spears will not be extorted,’ wrote the Toxic singer’s attorney Matt Rosengart in his filing.
The performer and her team are urging her father to give up his duties as her conservator immediately rather than continuing to draw out the process, which was first reported earlier this month.
If Jamie doesn’t step down shortly, they’re arguing that he should be removed as her conservator by September 29.

In the filing, Britney’s lawyers push her father to step down as soon as possible for the sake of his daughter’s ‘well-being.’
‘The world heard Ms. Spears’s courageous and compelling testimony,’ they wrote. ‘Britney Spears’s life matters. Her well-being matters. Every day matters. There is no basis to wait.’
In a statement to TMZ, Rosengart claimed that his client was being held ‘hostage’ by Jamie and his delays in resigning.
‘Britney Spears will not be bullied or extorted by her father. Nor does Mr. Spears have the right to try to hold his daughter hostage by setting the terms of his removal,’ he said. ‘This is not about him, it is about the best interests of his daughter, which as a matter of law, mandate his removal.’

He added that Jamie should step down because it was the moral thing to do, not just because it was legally appropriate.
‘Even putting aside the legal issues requiring his prompt removal, if he loves his daughter, Mr. Spears should resign now, today, before he is suspended. It would be the correct and decent thing to do,’ Rosengart said.
Earlier this month, DailyMail.com confirmed that the judge overseeing Britney’s conservatorship had denied her legal team’s request to have Jamie step down from his position immediately.
The next hearing is set for September 29, when her lawyers are hoping Judge Penny will remove Jamie if he doesn’t step down before then.
In the previous hearing, Jamie’s attorneys argued that there were ‘no grounds whatsoever’ to have him resign immediately.
They also described his daughter as ‘mentally sick.’

The allegations made by Britney at hearings in June and July — including ‘serious allegations regarding forced medical treatment and therapy, improper medical care, and limitations on personal rights’ — seem to have spurred Rosengart’s call for her father’s removal.
Jamie’s lawyers called the claims ‘untested’ and said they involve issues that have long been Montgomery’s responsibility, not his.
Jamie said the call for his quick removal was ‘ironic’ in the light of a call he claimed to have received from Jodi Montgomery, who is temporarily overseeing the singer’s life decisions, on July 9.
‘Ms. Montgomery sounded very distraught and expressed how concerned she was about my daughters’ recent behavior and overall mental health,’ Jamie said in a personal declaration included with his court filing.
Montgomery later claimed the call had been misrepresented and said that Jamie stepping down would be beneficial to Britney’s mental health.
The Baby One More Time hitmaker, 39, has been held under the conservatorship for 13 years following her much publicised breakdown – leading fans to launch the #FreeBritney movement to back her fight to have autonomy over her finances.
