Tokyo Olympics news LIVE: Adam Peaty wins Team GB’s first gold medal of the Games

Novak Djokovic comfortably saw off Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round in Tokyo to progress and keep his Golden Slam hopes alive. The world number one eased past the German 6-4 6-3 to make it two straight-sets wins in a row to kick off his Olympic bid. After winning the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon earlier in the year, Djokovic is looking to become the first man to win all four majors and the Olympics in the same year.

Tom Pidcock stormed to gold with a dominant ride in the men’s Olympic mountain bike race in Izu on Monday. The 21-year-old Yorkshireman started on the fourth row of the race but quickly got himself into the leading group and powered his way past the Swiss pair of Mathias Flueckiger and Nino Schurter to take control on the fourth of seven laps. Flueckiger was the only man who could even remotely keep up as Pidcock kept the power down to win by 20 seconds, having time to snatch a Union Flag and hold it aloft as he crossed the line.

Britain had a sensational day in Tokyo today on what has been dubbed ‘Mega Monday’ as Team GB claimed a string of Olympic medals – including three golds in just five hours. Adam Peaty became the first British swimmer to retain an Olympic title with a dominant display in the men’s 100m breaststroke, while Tom Pidcock stormed to gold with a dominant ride in the mountain bike race. And Tom Daley finally won his first Olympic gold alongside Matty Lee in the men’s synchronised 10m platform – which was Daley’s third Olympic medal after he won bronze at London 2012 and Rio 2016. Another silver or gold is guaranteed later today after Lauren Williams booked her place in the women’s -67kg taekwondo final against Matea Jelic at 1.30pm UK time after a pulsating win over Rio bronze winner Ruth Gbagbi. The British medal flurry began earlier in the day when Alex Yee continued Team GB’s run of success in Olympic triathlon events with a silver medal on his debut, behind Norway’s Kristian Blummenfelt.

Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski’s hopes of a medal in the men’s doubles were ended in the second round by a 6-3 6-4 defeat against Japanese pair Ben McLachlan and Kei Nishikori. Murray and Skupski survived a nail-biter in the first round but were unable to produce another comeback. It has been a difficult season for Murray and his lack of confidence was clear, with one break in each set enough for the Japanese duo to progress to the quarter-finals.

A 6ft 10ins robot basketball player – designed by Toyota and called Cue – wowed crowds at halftime during the Team USA vs France game at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday. Moving itself around the court using motors in its shoes, the robot hit a shot from the free-throw line before stepping back into three pointer range and then managed to sink a basket from half court in an impressive display. Cue achieves the feat by using a range of sensors and 3D mapping technology to work out where the basket is before algorithms adjust motors in its arms and legs to achieve the perfect angle and apply just the right amount of force to make the shot.

Tom Daley knew opportunities were running out and so what a moment for him to win his first Olympic medal alongside Matty Lee in the men’s synchronised 10m platform. The 27-year-old took bronze in both 2012 and 2016 and may well have thought that was his ceiling as an Olympian. But both Daly and Lee refused to bow down to the Chinese favourites as they went toe-to-toe, forcing mistakes and eventually coming out on top.  

Elsayed, aged just 18, pulled off the stunning victory in the first-round of the epee event at the weekend and opted to toast his success in style. Having landed the final blow, the talented star promptly threw off his helmet before racing away to launch himself into the air, turn and then shout, just like Ronaldo. Borel is a three-time world champion and was heavily tipped to eliminate Elsayed before eventually clinching the gold medal. But despite winning gold at Rio 2016, he was instead on the wrong end of a shock result, and could only watch on as his gleeful opponent wheeled away. Riding on the wave of jubilation, teen Elsayed then defeated China’s Lan Minghao 15-9, but was eventually knocked out in the quarter-finals by Ukrainian Ihor Reizlin.
