Character actor Bo Hopkins, who appeared in George Lucas’ American Graffiti and Oscar-winning Midnight Express, has died at age 84.

Hopkins died at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys after suffering a heart attack. His death was confirmed on his official website, Variety reported.

 ‘It is with great sadness that we announce that Bo has passed away,’ reads a statement on the website. ‘Bo loved hearing from his fans from around the world and although he was unable to respond to every email over the last few years, he appreciated hearing from each and every one of you.’

 The versatile actor appeared in more than 100 TV and movie roles in the past 50 years. His ability to play a bad guy and good guy made him a favorite among his adoring fans, and the directors.  

Some of his standout roles by director Sam Peckinpah include a double-crossed bank robber in the 1972 classic, ‘The Getaway,’  Clarence “Crazy” Lee in 1969 film, The Wild Bunch and as a weapons expert in the 1975 film, The Killer Elite.

His last film was in 2020, when he was featured in Hillbilly Elegy, with his former American Graffiti co-stars, directed by Ron Howard. 

He is survived by his wife Sian, who he has been married to for the last 33 years, and son Matthew.

 The handsome actor whose formal name was William Mauldin Hopkins was born February 2, 1938 in Greenville, South Carolina. 

His father worked at a local mill while his mother was a homemaker. His father died at age 39 of a heart attack, reportedly on the porch of his home in front of him and his mother.
