Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak has been accused of being ‘out of touch’ after it was revealed that he owns four cars, despite insisting he drives ‘the family Golf’.
Multimillionaire Sunak claimed yesterday that his family car is a Volkswagen Golf, a relatively cheap and sensible hatchback seen regularly around the streets of London.
But sources cited by The Mirror say the Chancellor owns four cars in total, and the ‘family Golf’ is the cheapest of them all by a considerable margin.
Sunak is also said to own a ‘high-spec’ Range Rover, a ‘top-of-the-range’ Lexus and a BMW, which are spread out amongst the Chancellor’s various estates in both the UK and the US.
The revelation comes as criticism mounts against Sunak, who was branded ‘Mr Tax’ last week following the announcement of his Spring Statement which will see the biggest real-terms fall in the state pension for half a century.
The Chancellor, whose personal ratings slumped to a record low in the wake of the statement, also copped flak last week when he borrowed a £12,000 car from a Sainsbury’s employee for a staged PR stunt about his temporary 5p fuel duty cut.

Rishi’s use of a VW Gold as his daily driver belies his considerable wealth which has afforded him the opportunity to own several quality motors.
A new Range Rover, like the one the Chancellor keeps at his North Yorkshire constituency according to sources, will set you back about £100,000.
A top-of-the-range luxury Lexus similar to the one Sunak is believed to keep at his Glitzy California home could cost anywhere from £40,000 – £100,000, while a top-spec BMW smashes through the six-figure price barrier.
News of the Chancellor’s enviable car collection has drawn further criticism, as Sunak contends with the fallout of his Spring Statement which saw him branded ‘Mr Tax’ by the opposition and caused his personal ratings to plummet.
The Treasury is already thought to be putting together another cost-of-living bailout, while the Chancellor was stung with accusations of being an ‘illusionist’ over his mini-Budget.
Despite Sunak trumpeting his tax-cutting credentials in a speech to MPs last week, fiscal watchdog the Office for Budget Responsibility said that the statement only unwound a sixth of the tax rises imposed since February 2020.
The tax burden on Britons is now on course to be the highest since Clement Attlee was PM after the Second World War.
‘Perhaps the Chancellor has been taking inspiration from the characters of Alice in Wonderland – or should I say Alice in Sunak-land – because nothing here is quite as it seems either,’ said shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves.
‘It’s the sort of place where a Chancellor celebrates giving people £200 to help them with their spiralling energy bills before explaining he needs it all back.’
Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves accused Sunak of delivering ‘increasingly incredible claims’, telling MPs: ‘Perhaps the Chancellor has been taking inspiration from the characters of Alice in Wonderland – or should I say Alice in Sunak-land – because nothing here is quite as it seems either.’

Details of Sunak’s fleet of motors also brought further ridicule following a PR gaffe last week in which the Chancellor was pictured filling up a £12,000 Kia Rio for a photo-op to celebrate the 5p cut to fuel duty.
It quickly transpired that Sunak had borrowed the car in question from a Sainsbury’s employee, needing a reasonably-priced motor for the stunt.
The Chancellor was filmed chatting on a London forecourt as he put £30.01 worth of petrol into the vehicle after announcing the temporary 5p fuel duty cut.
MailOnline revealed that he had a bruising exchange with angry motorists who gave him a ‘right earful’ over the ‘pathetic’ support package in the Spring Statement as he filled up the loaner.
He also struggled with the contactless payment, at one point presenting his card to a barcode reader.
