The explosive moment Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s hair has divided opinion, with fans torn over whether the actor was ‘out of control’ or simply ‘defending his wife’.

Thousands of Twitter users have taken to the platform to share their opinion in the hours after the shocking moment, which has led to calls for Smith to be stripped of his Best Actor Oscar.

The majority of Twitter have condemned Smith, claiming it was ‘unacceptable’, ‘disgusting’ and ‘shameful’ behaviour. Many noted what a poor example it sets for young fans and said trying to ‘justify’ violence is a ‘dangerous’ precedent.

One posted: ‘Will Smith assaulted a man on live television. People are not only making excuses for him, but the man was allowed to stay there and accept an award/be applauded.’

However others have stepped in to defend the actor, saying he was within his rights to strike Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife’s hair when she suffers from alopecia. One tweeted: ‘Will Smith is a king for defending his wife.’

The moment had sparked a debate on Twitter where viewers are split over whether it was an acceptable reaction

Rock said: ‘‘Jada, GI Jane 2, I can’t wait to see it’.

Accepting his Best Actor gong moments later for his role in King Richard, Smith delivered an acceptance speech in which he appeared to justify the violence by saying ‘love makes you do crazy things’ but failed to apologise to Rock.

The attempt to explain away the violent outburst prompted further criticism on Twitter.

One tweeted: ‘Will Smith’s justification for punching Chris Rock: “Love will make you do crazy things”. Sure it will. But that wasn’t love. That was out-of-control rage. Is stage rage going to be an acceptable thing now? Can we STOP accepting violence?’

Another posted: ‘Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscar’s was shameful. In my opinion this is an example of someone who is out of control, he needs to be charged with assault and banned from the Oscar’s.’

A third wrote: ‘Will Smith most definitely should lose his Oscar. Completely out of control behavior.’

Another added: ‘Unacceptable. Hold @WillSmith accountable. Too full of himself and out of control. His tearful speech was that of a narcissistic actor.’

One Twitter user chimed in: ‘Will Smith has let Hollywood get to him . His head is too big.’

The majority of Twitter have condemned Smith, saying violence is never an acceptable response

However others claimed Smith, 53, was in the right because he was ‘defending his wife’, with one posting: ‘Will Smith just raised the bar for defending your girl.’

Another argued: ‘Getting mad at will smith for defending his wife I’m guessing yall boyfriends cant fight.’

A third posted: ‘I don’t get people trying to criticize Will Smith for defending his wife, Jada, from Chris Rock. Jada was so clearly uncomfortable and this isn’t the first time Chris has targeted Jada. Honestly, I mean Will was reactionary and I don’t blame him.’

Others claimed Smith was within his rights to step up and defend his wife from the joke

Several Twitter users made the point that, while the joke was in poor taste, violence is still not an acceptable response to any situation.

Celebrities are also divided on the issue.

Hollywood stars quickly took to Twitter to call out Smith’s shocking attack, with comedian and director Judd Apatow calling the display ‘pure out of control rage and violence’ and claiming that Smith ‘could have killed’ Rock.’

Seems like Will Smith’s plan to get comedian and the world to not make jokes about him is not going to pan out. The Williams family must be furious. Pure narcissism,’ he wrote.

Kathy Griffin agreed with Apatow and called out Smith.

She wasn’t having any of the rationalizations and defenses for his conduct, and she worried that his attack would embolden hecklers that regularly interrupt comedy shows.

‘Let me tell you something, it’s a very bad practice to walk up on stage and physically assault a Comedian.

Now we all have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theaters.’

Rob Reiner wrote that there was ‘no excuse’ for what Smith did and called the apparent justifications in his acceptance speech ‘bulls***.’

‘Will Smith owes Chris Rock a huge apology. There is no excuse for what he did. He’s lucky Chris is not filing assault charges. The excuses he made tonight were bulls***.’
