This was the crisp autumnal scene that greeted early risers out for a stroll along the river in Cambridgeshire yesterday.
It was a similar picture across much of Britain as the first widespread frosts of the season saw temperatures fall to almost -2C (28F) in some rural areas – and there’s more frost on the way tonight.
The chilly northerly air is due to continue into tomorrow, with daytime temperatures across parts of the Pennines today struggling to reach 5C (41F) – that’s 2C colder than the forecast for the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik.
The coldest place through Tuesday night into yesterday morning was Benson, Oxfordshire, where -1.8C (29F) was recorded.

Helen Roberts, from the Meteorological Office, said: ‘There is still some warmth in the ground so it’s going to be mostly air frost. But some frost will form on the ground in places and ice on car windscreens.’
She said tonight is likely to be the coldest so far this winter, adding: ‘A few rural places could get down to -3C.’
Moving into the weekend, winds are set to swing around to the west, bringing milder air but strong winds and more rain through Saturday.
Sunday is due to be mostly fine and dry, with more unsettled conditions expected to sweep in next week.
