Huddersfield Mother’s house affected by mould, damp and ant infestation

A mother says her mental health is suffering because she is living in a damp and mouldy council house and says housing officials have ‘failed to help her’.
Claire Connor, 29, who has a two-year-old asthmatic daughter, lives in Newsome, Huddersfield and says issues with the house, which include an ant infestation have not yet been resolved.
The mental health services volunteer’s home has also been affected by damp, meaning Ms Connor had to delay an operation for her toddler.
She told Yorkshire Live: ‘It is a horrible damp smell. I am just being passed back and forth and nothing is really getting sorted- the situation is just getting worse and worse.
‘It is not nice to live in and it is not nice when you have a daughter who suffers from asthma.’
Her two-year-old, who has has to use an inhaler, is waiting for an operation to correct her sleep apnea – a condition which affects breathing while she is asleep.
Ms Connor says she first reported the damp and mould in February of this year.
Kirklees Housing’s damp team assessed the problem but she claims nothing happened to fix the issues.
Ms Connor said she has got ants in her kitchen and living room and her bedroom ‘stinks’ of mould.
The damp problems worsened when house flooded in August because of a burst pipe from her boiler.

She said much of her house and clothes were ruined by the flood but the council has not moved her and her daughter to alternative accommodation and claimed she was left to sort it out on her own.
Ms Conor says she was just given a ‘bag of rags’ to clean up the flood.

Dirt is seen on the floor and water has come through every gap in the ceiling.
In the kitchen, ants are seen crawling on the floor while Ms Connor is heard asking if there is any spray she can use to get rid of them.
Ms Connor who has lived in the house for two years, said the property has been plagued by problems from the start and have become worse since the flood.
She has also had problems with slugs, regularly sees slug trails on her daughter’s car seat and said she originally took the house as she was desperate for somewhere to live because she was 38 weeks pregnant and fleeing abuse.

She says she is frustrated by responses from Kirklees Council and Kirklees Housing and since taken her case to her local councillor, Andrew Cooper. Her complaint was referred to KNH on her behalf by Cllr Cooper who was told her case would be dealt with.
Cllr Cooper, has now asked to be told what is happening next with Ms Connor’s situation.
He told Yorkshire Live: “I think everybody deserves to live in clean and dry conditions. There are things sorting out that need to be addressed and I wouldn’t be happy if I was in that situation.”
Ms Connor said everything is a ‘mess’ and her mental health is shocking because of what is happening.
