Demand for travel to former ‘red list’ destinations including Mexico and Thailand has surged, booking websites have told MailOnline as dozens of the countries were opened up for travel today.

The 47 countries were removed from the UK Foreign Office’s red list at 4am this morning, meaning arrivals in England from those locations will no longer need to spend 11 nights in a quarantine hotel.

After the update was announced last Thursday, flight booking website Skyscanner said its traffic that evening was up 60 per cent in the following three hours, compared to the same time the previous week.

On the same day there was a 126 per cent rise in searches to Mexico compared to the day before and a 112 per cent increase in daily searches to Thailand, while ‘everywhere’ was the third most popular search on the website.

Meanwhile TravelSupermarket said that between last Monday and yesterday, Cape Verde has become its most booked destination – something the website said ‘shows the incredible impact of the latest travel announcement’.

Other countries affected by the reduction in the red list, most of which are long-haul destinations, include Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Indonesia, Mexico, Nepal, the Philippines, the Seychelles and South Africa.

The Foreign Office has also lifted its advice against non-essential travel to a further 42 countries and territories due to the coronavirus pandemic. This follows the removal of travel advisories to 41 locations last week.

It is part of a new policy to stop advising Britons to avoid all but essential travel to non-red list countries on Covid-19 grounds except in ‘exceptional circumstances’, such as if the local healthcare system is overwhelmed.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has said this allows people to ‘exercise personal responsibility’, while Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has claimed ‘restoring people’s confidence in travel is key to rebuilding our economy’.

Just seven countries remain on the red list – Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. People arriving from these nations must still enter a quarantine hotel for £2,285 for solo travellers.

Stephanie Boyle, global travel industry expert for Skyscanner, said: ‘We are expecting to see a significant and immediate uptick in demand with searches and bookings on Skyscanner ahead of key holiday moments like October half-term and the peak winter sun period.

‘As well as holiday travel, we will see increases in bookings for those looking to visit loved ones over the festive period. This change in rules will drive long-term trip planning, and we expect to see searches and bookings for the remainder of the year and into 2022 rise sharply as a result.’

Since last Thursday, the top booked holiday destinations on Skyscanner are Dubai, Tenerife and Alicante. Trip plans remain mostly short-term, with the most popular departure date booked being Friday October 22, when the half-term holidays begin.

The top searched country since last Thursday is still Spain, which was unaffected by the latest announcement but remains the UK’s favourite destination.

However, previous ‘red list’ countries have moved into the top 20 searched destinations following the announcement, including South Africa and Thailand.

Emma Coulthurst from the holiday price comparison websites TravelSupermarket and icelolly.com, told MailOnline: ‘Mexico – in particular the Caribbean coast and the resort of Cancun – and Cape Verde are the two stand out countries which have seen increased holiday interests. Both countries are popular for winter sun escapes.’

She added that the firm’s package holiday price comparison search data shows that people are searching 133 per cent more Cape Verde, which has gone from 12th to 4th most searched for a package holiday.

This data looks at the period between last Thursday and now, versus the same period the week before.

Ms Coulthurst continued: ‘From October 4 to 10, Cape Verde has become the most booked destination via TravelSupermarket. That just shows the incredible impact of the latest travel announcement.’

Skyscanner also said there was a 126 per cent rise in searches to Thailand compared to the day before. Maya Bay is pictured

Meanwhile package holiday price comparison searches for Mexico have shot up 72 per cent in a week, taking it from 7th to 5th most searched country.

Package holiday price comparison searches have increased a further 29 per cent via TravelSupermarket as a whole from last Thursday to now, versus the same period a week ago.

British Airways reported a five-fold increase in searches for holidays on its website in the hours after the red-list reduction was announced, compared with the same period during the previous day. Cancun, Cape Town and Johannesburg were among the most popular destinations.

On the Beach chief executive Simon Cooper said the holiday website was expecting Mexico to be among the destinations that will now see a surge in bookings.

He said it comes after the firm saw a ‘significant’ rise in interest for Egypt following its removal from the red list on September 22 – making it the third most popular destination for winter sun over the Christmas period.

And an On the Beach spokesman said today: ‘Mexico, Thailand and Tunisia are traditionally very popular destinations for On the Beach customers and we have seen increased interest to book since the latest update.

‘Given the length of time these destinations have been on the red list, demand is coming from a low base, however in the four days since the announcement, bookings to Mexico have increased 180 per cent, Thailand by 400 per cent and Tunisia, 80 per cent – this is compared to the four days prior to the update. It’s a promising sign that customer appetite and confidence to travel again is growing, and we hope to see this continue.’

Meanwhile travel money company FairFX reported a 39 per cent spike in prepaid travel card orders for the South African rand – with Britons having been blocked from travelling to the country since December 24 last year.

Ian Strafford-Taylor, chief executive of FairFX, said: ‘We’ve seen a big increase in orders of the South African rand in the last couple of weeks, which suggests British holidaymakers are jumping at the chance to go further afield than Europe and visit destinations they’ve been locked out of for so long.’

Last Thursday it also emerged that costly PCR tests will be scrapped in time for families returning from half-term holidays. Sources said they will be replaced with cheaper rapid lateral flow swabs for double-jabbed travellers.

It means families going on a week-long break at the start of the October half-term holidays should be able to dodge shelling out for pricey PCR swabs on their return.

Ministers also agreed that returning vaccinated holidaymakers will not have to film themselves taking Covid tests. Health Secretary Sajid Javid had wanted travellers to be supervised taking the rapid tests.

But following a meeting of the ‘Covid O’ committee of Cabinet ministers on Thursday morning, it was agreed that a photograph of the negative result taken on a mobile phone and sent to the provider to verify will be sufficient.

Tourists will have to book the lateral flow tests through private providers – not the NHS – and prove on their passenger locator form, which must be filled out by all travellers before returning, that they have done so.

Welcome to the world! Kiss goodbye to the red list, the globe’s open to travellers at last. And with bargain reductions of up to 45%, it’s time to get booking…
