The 74th annual Tony Awards in New York City on Sunday evening marked the return of Broadway in a major way.

Held at the Winter Garden Theatre some of the best and brightest in theatre, film, and television turned up for the momentous occasion.

With the award show long delayed on account of the pandemic, the event is set to honor shows from the 2019-2020 Broadway season.

Laura Linney, Mary-Louise Parker and Audra McDonald all scored nominations for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a play and rose to the occasion with their looks.

Linney, who dazzled in My Name Is Lucy Barton, modeled a black dress with a puffed collar and ruffled skirt on top of a dramatic train.

Parker, the star of The Sound Inside, looked a pretty penny as she wore a strapless copper dress with matching heels.

And McDonald of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune kept it classic in a strapless black satin dress that featured a bow in the back, and was joined by husband Will Swenson.

Star power: Laura Linney, 57, was glamorous in a full-length black gown with puffed collar, ruffled waist and small train

Pretty look: Linney wore her blonde hair swept back from her face and accessorized with dramatic earrings

Chic: Mary-Louise Parker shone in a strapless patterned satin dress and matching peep-toe heels

Looking good: Parker, 57, left her long dark hair tumble down around her shoulders and added color with some matte red lipstick

Radiant: McDonald, 51,  made an entrance in a black gown with a bow at the back as she arrived for the awards show that aired live on CBS

Couple: McDonald was accompanied by her dapper husband Will Swenson

Additionally she was tapped to host the event for the evening alongside previous award winners Leslie Odom Jr.

When Broadway shut down in March 2020 on account of the pandemic 20 shows had opened at the time with an additional 16 more set to come.

Though the lights remained dark with many fearing it would never return (at least not as it was) Broadway opened last month.

Stunners: Debra Messing dazzled in dark green silk and chunky jewelry while Sienna Miller flashed skin in a low-cut silver patterned dress with spaghetti straps

Big night: Miller was a supportive date for nominated actor Tom Sturridge, her ex-partner and father of her daughter Marlowe, nine

Veteran: Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda attended the show

Black and white: Jennifer Nettles, 47, showed off her lithe figure in a two-tone strapless dress. The singer and actress wore her hair in a stylish updo

Showing support: Modern Family alum walked the red carpet in a pale blue suit while his husband Justin Mikita was dressed in royal blue

In the spotlight: Adrienne Warren chose an off-white gown with plunging neckline and wide pleated skirt while Daphne Rubin-Vega opted for a slinky ivory number

Dapper duo: Best actor nominee Aaron Tveit was dressed in all white while Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr in monochrome co-hosted the event

Couple: Odom Jr. was accompanied by stunning wife Nicolette Robinson who looked lovely in a beige tulle gown

Stealing the show: Jake Gyllenhaal stood out from the crowd in a lilac two-piece suit with cummerbund and a pair of shiny black dress shoes

Showing support: Gyllenhaal’s girlfriend Jeanne Cadieu walked the red carpet separately in a very revealing scarlet outfit

Naturally, the biggest event at the award show is always for Best Musical and this year Jagged Little Pill, Moulin Rouge: The Musical and Tina: The Tina Turner Musical were nominated.

The stars of those musicals, actor Aaron Tveit and actress Karen Olivo (Moulin Rouge) were nominated for Best Performance alongside Jagged Little Pill’s Elizabeth Stanley and Adrienne Warren who played Turner.

Tveit snagged a large honor as he was the only nominee for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, making him a shoo-in.

And Jake Gyllenhaal was nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Play for Sea Wall/A Life.
