A woman whose eczema was so bad that she ended up in hospital has now gone on to launch her own skincare line The Beauty of Eczema that’s designed to soothe and calm dry, itchy skin.

Camille Knowles, 29, from Manchester, was just six years old when she was diagnosed with severe eczema that plagued her with angry flare-ups across her arms, legs, back and face.

Now, after years of struggling with the skin condition that shockingly left her hospital in 2013, Camille says her skin has become her ‘friend’. But it hasn’t been an easy journey.

After years of struggling with the skin condition that shockingly left her hospital in 2013, Camille says her skin is now her ‘friend’ and has since gone on to write a book and launch her very own skincare line The Beauty of Eczema

The Beauty of Eczema founder explained how a holistic approach and self-love journey helped manage her skin and inspire her to launch her own products

After trying over-the-counter medications, steroids, and creams, Camille, who is now the founder of the skincare line The Beauty of Eczema, explained how a holistic approach and self-love journey helped manage her skin and inspire her to launch her own products.

‘The name was born from my lifelong struggle with the condition. I couldn’t say the E word let alone call it beautiful after it left me hospitalised in 2013,’ she said.

‘Through this journey, I found that my skin was not my enemy. It was secretly my best friend all along. What I believe is that when my skin feels more sensitive, it’s because I am feeling more sensitive and out of alignment.

Formulated with dry and sensitive skin in mind, the natural, cruelty-free, and vegan-friendly skincare line consists of four dermatologically tested product

Camille explained how a holistic approach and self-love journey helped manage her skin and inspire her to launch her own products

‘My skin is a sign from my body to tune in, slow down and make some necessary changes to glow. These could be getting out in nature, dosing up on sleep, setting new boundaries, changing my living environment and so on.

‘When I tuned into my body, I found that it gave me signs all along on how to take care of myself. I found that my skin is my friend (though annoying at times) and is looking out for me and guiding me to live my best life, and for that, I am truly grateful.’

What is eczema?

Atopic eczema (atopic dermatitis) is the most common form of eczema, a condition that causes the skin to become itchy, dry and cracked.

It’s usually a long-term (chronic) condition, although it can improve significantly, or even clear completely, in some children as they get older.

She added: ‘That is why the brand is called The Beauty of Eczema, and my hope is to inspire others and share my knowledge so they can see the same in their skin too.’

Formulated with dry and sensitive skin in mind, the natural, cruelty-free, and vegan-friendly skincare line consists of four dermatologically tested products; Calming Cream, Skin Warrior Wash, Pamper Me Bathing Oil and Salty Soother Bath Salts.

With prices starting from as little as £14, each product is brimming with emollients that help soothe, calm, protect and in some cases manage eczema flare-ups. And customers have been impressed.

‘This cream is very effective for soothing highly irritated, red and itchy skin,’ wrote one reviewer who praised the brand’s Calming Cream.

‘During the past six months, I have suffered bad eczema flare-ups, particularly on my face.

‘This cream helps me manage the eczema on my face and body, and it’s also a lovely non-greasy moisturiser (doesn’t block pores at all) even when my eczema isn’t too bad.

They added: ‘Definitely recommend, especially for facial eczema, when petroleum-based creams can are so greasy and can block pores.’

Others note how moisturising the products are, which is important since keeping the skin hydrated helps deal with eczema. Another shopper commented in their review of the brand’s Skin Warrior Wash: ‘I’m in love and love how it makes my skin feel. It’s so moisturising and smells amazing.

Ingredients include mango butter, rich shea butter, jojoba seed oil along with rhamnosoft and bioecolia that together hydrate, protect and strengthen the skin’s barrier

‘Perfect for eczema-prone skin and have seen a significant difference after I come out of the shower. Before my skin used to feel so tight, but since using it, my skin feels so soft.’

Ingredients include mango butter, rich shea butter, jojoba seed oil and two secret ingredients: rhamnosoft, a fermented sugar-based ingredient that protects and hydrates dry skin, and bioecolia, a prebiotic that helps to visibly balance the skin, encouraging the strengthening of the skin’s moisture barrier.
