He is best known for playing peroxide-blond junkie Sick Boy in cult film Trainspotting.

So with grey hair, large glasses and dressed in a dinner suit, Jonny Lee Miller looked unrecognisable in his latest role as Sir John Major in the next series of The Crown.

In exclusive pictures, the 48-year-old actor can be seen in character for the first time as the 1990s Tory prime minister in the fifth instalment of the lavish Netflix drama.

He was pictured walking to the set in Hertfordshire alongside his co-star Dominic West, 51, who has replaced Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles

West took advantage of the full Highland dress he was wearing to keep his mobile phone in his sporran.

The cast appeared to be filming a scene set at Balmoral, the Royal Family’s Scottish retreat.

Others spotted on set but who have not yet been confirmed by Netflix include Flora Montgomery as Major’s wife Norma. She was snapped wearing a layered teal dress.

Lesley Manville, who has replaced Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, was pictured in a yellow gown with puffed sleeves.

Seen for the first time in character, the actress wore a red tartan sash and a tiara and was seen talking to a member of the crew.

Upcoming actress Emma Laird Craig was unmistakable as Sarah, Duchess of York, with long red hair and wearing a bright pink dress.

The Queen Mother, played by veteran actress Marcia Warren, was also spotted on set in a powder blue gown.

And Claudia Harrison, who is reportedly playing Princess Anne, stepped out in a white gown with puff sleeves.

Apparently absent from the location Imelda Staunton, who is replacing Olivia Colman as the Queen, Jonathan Pryce, who is succeeding Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, and Elizabeth Debicki, who has replaced Emma Corrin as Princess Diana.

While it is not yet known what storylines the fifth and sixth series will follow, it has previously been said they will bring the drama into the 21st century.

Episodes could deal with Prince Andrew’s separation from Sarah, the fire at Windsor Castle, and Anne’s divorce from Mark Phillips, all in 1992.

They may also feature the death of Diana in 1997 and the deaths of Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother in 2002.
