A police officer died after being stabbed on Tuesday morning during a burst of violence at a transit station outside the Pentagon, and a suspect was shot by law enforcement and died at the scene.

During a press conference this afternoon, Pentagon Chief of Police Woodrow Kusse said that one of his officers was attacked on a bus platform by Pentagon’s Metro station at 10.37am. He repeatedly declined to confirm the officer’s death, or the suspect’s killing.

Kusse would only say that the crime scene was secure and that police were not looking for a second suspect, contrary to previous reports. He also confirmed that multiple people were injured, but would not say how many.

The Pentagon lifted the lockdown and reopened at 12.15pm, according to a tweet from the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, which said that the scene was secure.

Arlington Fire Department previously said its crews encountered ‘multiple patients,’ but it is unclear at this time if any of them was shot.

A police officer was said to be among the victims. He was taken to George Washington Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from stab wounds.

The connection between the shooting and the stabbing of the officer was not immediately clear. The authorities did not immediately provide details or the sequence of events.

The incident occurred on a Metro bus platform that is part of the Pentagon Transit Center. The hub is just steps from the Pentagon building, which is in Arlington County, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.

An Associated Press reporter near the building heard multiple gunshots, then a pause, then at least one additional shot. Another AP journalist heard police yelling ‘shooter.’

A Pentagon announcement said the facility was on lockdown due to ‘police activity.’

Fairfax Police are actively searching for a suspect in the shooting. They believe the suspect is headed north toward Maryland, reported Fox 5 DC.

Metro subway trains were ordered to bypass the Pentagon due to the police investigation.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were at the White House meeting with President Joe Biden, at the time of the shooting.

In 2010, two officers with the Pentagon Force Protection Agency were wounded when a gunman approached them at a security screening area. The officers, who survived, returned fire, fatally wounding the gunman, identified as John Patrick Bedell.
