Man, 19, is stabbed to death in south east London as figures show more teenagers have been ‘murdered’ in capital this year than whole of 2020

Police in London have launched a murder investigation after a teenager was stabbed to death this week, as statistics show that more teens have been killed in the capital in the first six months of this year than 2020. 

Metropolitan Police officers were called to a street in Sydenham, south east London on Friday evening at 21:30 following reports that a 19-year-old man had been stabbed. 

The teen died at the scene.

The man is the 18th teen victim to be killed in London this year, with 16 of those having been stabbed.

A total of 17 teenagers were killed in London last year. 

The worst year for teen deaths in the capital in the post war era was 2008, when 29 were unlawfully killed.  

Officers attempted first aid on the latest victim of knife crime and London Ambulance Service were also called to the scene at Miall Walk on Friday (June 25). 

Homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are leading the investigation into the incident.

Formal identification and a post-mortem examination is set to take place in the coming days.  

The teenager’s family have been told, and Detective Chief Inspector Chris Wood said the victim’s mother visited the scene, and is being supported by officers 

‘Met officers have been working through the night to commence what will be a rigorous investigation into the death of this young man,’ he said.

‘[The victim’s mother] and other family members will be provided with ongoing support, and my heart goes out to her as she faces up to the first day of the rest of her life without her son.

‘I can assure her, and indeed all Londoners, of my total commitment to finding the person or persons responsible for this murder and bringing them to justice.

‘The support of the local community, and of anyone who may know anything about this tragic incident, will also be crucial. If you have any information, please get in touch.’

January 20: Anas Mezenner, 17, died in hospital after being stabbed in Tottenham the previous evening. Two boys, both aged 16, were charged with murder.  

January 25: Romario Opia, 15, was stabbed to death in Archway. 

February 11: Hani Solomon, 19, was stabbed to death outside Parsons Green tube station. Two teenagers were charged with murder. 

February 19: Drekwon Patterson, 16, died in hospital after being stabbed in Wembley the previous evening. 

February 26: Ahmed Beker, 19, was stabbed to death on Paddington Green. 

March 3: Tai O’Donnel, 19, was stabbed to death in Croydon. A woman, 22, was charged with murder. 

March 6: Mazaza Owusu-Mensah, 18, was stabbed to death in Abbey Wood. 

March 8: Nikolay Vandev, 19, was stabbed to death in Tottenham. Two boys, aged 15 and 17, were charged with murder. 

March 10: Ezra Okobia, 14, died in hospital four days after his five-year-old brother Joseph Okobia died following a fire in the family’s flat in Greenwich. Their mother, Victoria Amaning, 34, died from her injuries on March 11. Police believe the fire was started deliberately inside the address and ruled out the involvement of a third party. 

March 17: Hussain Chaudhry, 18 was stabbed to death in Walthamstow. A teenager was charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder. 

April 10: Levi Ernest-Morrison, 17, was fatally stabbed in Sydenham. A woman, aged 36, was charged with murder. 

April 23: Fares Maatou, 14, was stabbed to death in Canning Town. 

April 26: Abubakar ‘Junior’ Jah, 18, was stabbed and shot in Canning Town. 

May 7: Daniel Laskos, 16, was stabbed to death in Harold Wood. Five teenagers were charged with murder. 

June 8: Taylor Cox, 19, was shot in Crouch Hill. A teenager, aged 19, was charged with murder. 

June 10: Denardo Samuels-Brooks, 17, was fatally stabbed in Streatham. Four teenagers were charged. 

June 11: Jalan Woods-Bell, 15, was stabbed in Hayes. A boy, aged 15, was charged with murder. 

June 25: A 19-year-old man was stabbed to death in Sydenham.
