A woman, 29, has drowned and a British man is feared dead after the pair went missing in rough seas after a late night swim at a popular beach on the Gold Coast.

The man, understood to have gone skinny dipping, was seen entering the surf with the woman at Kurrawa Beach in Broadbeach around 9.20pm on Thursday night.

But just an hour later, locals spotted the body of the woman, believed to be a Victorian on holiday, near Kurrawa Surf Club and called an ambulance.

Horrified walkers spotted her body, which was in a swimsuit in the water and dragged her to shore.

Witnesses and paramedics desperately tried to revive the woman but she died at the scene.

The British man, who lives locally and whose car was found at the scene with a ‘Get Naked Australia’ sticker on it, is yet to be found.

His clothes were also found on the beach.

CCTV cameras at the surf club showed the woman and a man earlier entering the water together for a late-night swim.

‘We don’t expect to find anyone alive,’ Acting Inspector John Diggle told the Courier Mail.

‘Because we’ve got Rescue 500 and water police in the area, they do a great job.

‘They’ll find it (the body).’

He said the conditions were ‘appalling’ with huge swells of up to 1.8 metres.

The search for the missing man resumed on Friday morning with aerial assistance and personnel scouring the beach.

A report will be prepared for the coroner in relation to the woman’s death.

A hazardous surf warning remains in place for much of Queensland’s south-east, including the Gold Coast.

‘Surf and swell conditions expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, swimming & surfing for Fraser Island Coast, Sunshine Coast Waters & Gold Coast Waters,’ the Bureau of Meteorology tweeted.
