The Masked Singer: Sir Lenny Henry and Morten Harket revealed in double elimination

The Masked Singer: Blob is unmasked as Sir Lenny Henry… while A-Ha singer Morten Harket is revealed to be Viking during double elimination

Sir Lenny Henry and A-Ha singer Morten Harket were both unmasked during a double elimination on Saturday night’s episode of The Masked Singer.

The Viking was the first to have his mask removed as he was revealed to be Morten, 61, after failing to win votes with his version of Coldplay’s The Scientist.

Judges Davina McCall, Rita Ora, Jonathan Ross, Mo Gilligan, and guest panellist Alan Carr took turns guessing who could be hidden under the Viking mask.

They suggested that possible celebs under the mask could be Brendan from Coach Trip, Ricky Wilson of Kaiser Chiefs, Bear Grylls and Judge Robert Rinder.

Morten was the first contestant to ever sing his own song on the show, after giving judges and viewers a rendition of his band’s track, Take On Me.

He became the sixth contestant to leave the show, after Bush Baby singer John Thomson was sent packing last week.

Explaining why he took part, Morten said: ‘I did it because I needed to be kicked out of my comfort zone. Fun to be another character, never done that before. Never done theatre or films.’

It was then decided who the second celebrity to leave would be, with both Dragon and Blob at risk of going home.

The judges opted to save Dragon and send Blob home.

It was soon revealed that Sir Lenny, 62, was behind the mask after the judges guessed it could be Stephen Fry, Joe Wicks, Lenny Henry, Ainsley Harriott and Morgan Freeman.

After taking off his mask, he said: ‘Oh God! Hello! It’s not Stephen Fry. Thank you for being so generous with Morgan Freeman.’

Joel Dommett asked, ‘How’ve you found it?’ While Sir Lenny said: ‘I think when I discovered you could turn around [in the costume], that was a big breakthrough.’

He said: ‘We always knew it was someone funny!’ to which Rita: ‘I think the Shakespeare thing stuck it in for you.’

Sharing the dramatic news on Twitter in a video, ITV confirmed: ‘Next week, it’s a double elimination as seven masked singers take to the stage.

‘Plus for one night only, Alan Carr joins the panel.’

In the video the comedian, 44, appeared to be in great spirits as he watched the performances and even excitedly guessed that one person could be Cher.

The show has sparked dozens of theories over who is behind the remaining seven masked singers, with Stacey Solomon, Aston Merrygold and Lenny Henry all tipped as competing in the show.

The Cold Feet star, 51, was one of the first celebrities who the panel failed to guess ahead of his unmasking, after completely throwing viewers with a fake Australian accent.

After his unmasking John admitted he was ‘relieved’ to be revealed as he’d struggled to keep cool in the stifling hot animal suit, joking he hoped to land a job at Disney in the future.

Davina said she was thrilled that nobody on the panel guessed Bush Baby’s identity, despite theories including Jamie Oliver and Gino D’Campo.

Jonathan Ross was adamant Bush Baby’s Australian accent was a red herring, and was quickly proven right once Worsley-born John was unmasked.

Speaking after the vote-off John said: ‘I have to say as a Northerner who doesn’t feel the cold it’s not been the greatest. I will admit there is a sense of relief here.’

As well as playing Pete Gilford on Cold Feet throughout its nine series run, John has  starred in Coronation Street, The Fast Show and Men Behaving Badly.

Speaking following his unmasking, he said: ‘I got halfway which was perfect for me as I wasn’t in it to win it.

‘I did it for fun and I was very grateful to be able to work during the pandemic. I was also very relieved as the costume was very, very hot and uncomfortable.’

Ahead of the elimination, host Joel Dommett revealed that Dragon and Bush Baby had received the least number of votes, and the judges opted to save the fire-breathing reptile again.
