  • She appeared on Loose Women to discuss marriage on anniversary of his death
  • Unimpressed viewers criticised former model for ‘awkward, rambling’ interview

Loose Women viewers have criticised David Bowie‘s ex-wife Angie for her ‘awkward and rambling’ interview to mark the anniversary of the late musician’s death.

The Cyprus-born former model, 71, appeared on the show today to discuss their ten year relationship, revealing how she wouldn’t have married Bowie had it not been for her ‘lifelong commitment’ to making him an international star.

During the candid chat she touched on her estrangement from her now 44-year-old son Duncan, known as Zowie when he was younger, and how her marriage to David was originally nothing more than an arrangement to keep her in the UK.

Viewers said they were ‘cringing’ while watching the interview, and accused Angie of ‘cashing in’ on their relationship despite it ending in 1980, more than 30 years before the late rocker died.

‘Angie Bowie divorced David 40 years ago? Why are they making out she was his life long partner?’ wrote one.

Another wrote: ‘This interview with Angie Bowie on @loosewomen is a car crash. She is making no sense at all.’

A third raged: ‘Can’t believe you’re going to have Angie Bowie on talking about David on the anniversary of his death! She has no knowledge of him for over 30 years. She’s cashing in on this, why are you allowing it?? She’s his ex for a reason. Think of his wife!’

‘Cringing watching the Angie Bowie interview. These video interviews are a bit awkward normally, but this woman rambling on isn’t nice to watch!’, commented a fourth.

During the interview Angie opened up about their marriage began, claiming it was ‘nothing to do with love’, but because David was keen to keep her from having to return to the US after finishing university.

The pair had met in London in 1969 through mutual friends while Angie was trying to bag a job at Mercury Records in the UK.

‘I wouldn’t have gotten involved if it hadn’t been a lifelong commitment to making him an international phenomenon,’ she said. ‘I took my marketing first job very seriously and he was it.

‘Because of the way he asked me to marry him, it was nothing to do with love, it was to do with convenience.

She went on: ‘He decided the things I had brought to the table, he liked me, we had the same sense of humour. So that was it, he asked me to marry him.

‘Then when we were married he started to get cute and intimate and nice and unlike the person reported to be when he asked me to marry him, and there were two or three years when Zowie was born that I really cherish.’

She also touched on the reason David decided to have children, claiming she had suggested starting a family to make the rocker more ‘cautious’ after he had accidentally stabbed himself in the groin.

Angie also spoke on her relationship with her son David, who she hasn't seen since he was a teenager, confessing that she is 'at peace' with her decision. Pictured, Angie and David in 1973

‘I started to think about how he could be a little more cautious and asked him would this be a good thing and he said “Oh yes I would love to have a child”, okay there we go.’

Angie also spoke on her relationship with her son Duncan, who she hasn’t seen since he was a teenager, confessing that she is ‘at peace’ with her decision not to be involved in his life.

‘I was always at peace with it’, she said. ‘It was what I decided, what could I do, if you make a decision, I made that decision.

‘I said I would never fight for custody I would never do anything to threaten to use him as leverage and I never did. I sent him some letters and boxes of gifts but I don’t think he ever got any of them.’
