There are queues outside Debenhams stores across the UK, with shoppers hoping to bag bargains in the retailer’s final sale.

The chain has become the latest Covid high street casualty and will be liquidated in the New Year after rescue talks with JD Sport fell through, drawing a line under 242 years of trading and jeopardising 12,000 jobs.

Debenhams is opening its 124 shops with a fire sale of its stock with handbags, shoes, boots, watches and dresses  on sale for up to 70 per cent off the original price.

But you don’t need to visit Debenhams in person to get your hands on amazing deals. The retailer’s website is offering discounts on everything too – and FEMAIL has found the very best buys on offer.

The online sales are already so in demand that shoppers are having to join a virtual queue to be ‘let in’ to the website – but these bargains are definitely worth the wait.

Among the highlights are a some Lands’ End Blue Flannel Patterned Pyjama Bottoms at half their original price, costing £17.50, and a Pure Luxuries London Burgundy ‘Monet’ Leather Tote Bag for £65, a saving of £63.

And for those wanting to add to their winter wardrobe, there’s a James Lakeland Multicoloured Pink Paisley Kaftan costing £34.50, a 50 per cent reduction from the original price.

Open until midnight, store-only discounts and queue-busting apps: How big name shops – desperate for a festive sales boost – are wooing customers back to the high street

The pubs may be calling time at 10pm across much of the UK in the run up to Christmas but shopping may be an alternative option for night owls, as some high street stores say they’ll open until midnight in a bid to try and woo people to shop in person this yuletide, rather than online.

H&M told FEMAIL that many of its UK stores are offering shop-only deals in the busy festive period, meaning you can only snap up the brand’s best bargains if you make the effort to visit a store.

Indeed, while ‘sale’ signs were being unfurled at branches following the end of lockdown this morning, there is little sign of the same deals being made available on the H&M website.

Mango too has up to 50 per cent off clothes in store but isn’t offering the same deals when you log on to the Spanish brand’s website.

At M&S, there are plenty of deals to be found online but the high street giant is hoping to woo people back through its doors too, offering a raft of enticing shop-only experiences.

Over 400 branches will stay open as late as midnight in the last few days before Christmas, with M&S also investing in a team of ‘magic makers’ around stores to ensure customer service is top-notch when customers return.

There’s also bookable shopping slots and the M&S Mobile Pay Go app, which aims to help people beat the traditional festive queues.

Sacha Berendji, M&S’s Retail, Operations & Property Director said: ‘In addition to our extensive hygiene measures, we’re offering our longest-ever opening hours and important new services like ‘Sparks Book and Shop’, whilst still delivering the festive feeling and inspiration customers are after in our shops.’
