In a statement, Leicestershire Police said: ‘After arriving in the area, officers carried out an immediate search and an 18-year-old man from Leicester was arrested on suspicion of murder.

‘He remains in custody and inquiries are ongoing.’

Detective Inspector Nicole Main said: ‘While one man has been arrested, our inquiries into this incident are continuing and officers remain in the area.

‘This is to both help with the investigation and offer reassurance to the local community.

‘A scene preservation is in place in Bartholomew Street.

‘I would very much like to speak to anyone who has information but has not yet spoken to police.

‘I believe that there will people living in the Highfields area who know what happened.

‘Were you in Bartholomew Street or the surrounding streets in the early hours of this morning? Did you see what happened, or did you hear anything that aroused suspicion?

‘I’m particularly keen to speak to anyone who was driving in the area at the time – for example taxi drivers – and who has a dashcam installed in their vehicle.

‘Any information you have could help with our investigation.’
